Secretary of State Announces Release of American Hostage by Taliban

Other Americans continue to be wrongfully detained in Afghanistan.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the release of American Dennis Coyle from Taliban captivity on Tuesday. The 64-year-old academic, who had lived in Afghanistan for 20 years conducting language research and local community support, was abducted from his apartment in Kabul last year and imprisoned by the Taliban.

“After more than a year of captivity in Afghanistan, Dennis Coyle is on his way home,” Secretary Rubio stated. “President Trump is committed to ending unjust detentions overseas – Dennis joins over 100 Americans who have been freed in the past 15 months under his second term in office.”

The secretary of state thanked the United Arab Emirates and Qatar for the assistance and advocacy they have provided to secure the release of Americans unjustly detained in Afghanistan. He added, “While this is a positive step by the Taliban, more work needs to be done. We are still seeking the immediate return of Mahmood Habibi, Paul Overby, and all other unjustly detained Americans. The Taliban must end their practice of hostage diplomacy.”

President Trump’s administration has designated Afghanistan a State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For President Trump and Secretary Rubio as they seek to obtain the release of Americans wrongfully imprisoned overseas.
  • For U.S. diplomats and officials as they engage in talks with foreign ministers and officials.
  • For U.S. citizens who have been taken captive as potential leverage against America.
